Dr. Fuentes doping program goes back
GENEVA - Another day, another doping case, another Tour de France result amended. cheap nfl jerseys . Cycling revisited its scandal-scarred recent history again Thursday as the Court of Arbitration for Sport found a Tour winner guilty of doping for the second time this week. Jan Ullrich, the 1997 champion, was stripped of his third-place finish in the 2005 race for "intensive involvement" in blood doping linked to the Operation Puerto case. The 38-year-old German was also banned from the sport for two years. Because Ullrich retired in disgrace after the Spanish doping probe emerged in 2006, his latest shame lacked the impact of Alberto Contadors defeat at sports highest court on Monday. Contador was stripped of his third Tour victory after CAS rejected his explanation that eating contaminated meat caused his positive tests for clenbuterol in the final days of the 2010 race. The 29-year-old Spaniards backdated two-year ban will remove the best Tour de France rider since Lance Armstrong from this years race at the peak of his career. Both cases represented victories for the International Cycling Union, whose appeals forced the star riders to fight for their reputations in court. Yet the two often-delayed cases, launched years apart, delivered back-to-back decisions which reinforced the perception that cycling is riven with cheating. In addition, French great Jeannie Longo became embroiled in scandal Wednesday when her husband was arrested on suspicion of buying the banned performance-enhancer EPO. The UCI, which described Contadors sanction as "a sad day" for cycling, declined to comment on Ullrichs case before studying the ruling of the CAS panel. The 24-page document spoke volumes about doping in the peloton almost a decade ago. Ullrich had been "fully engaged" in the doping program of Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes that was exposed in Operation Puerto, the panel wrote. "In particular, the UCI alleges that Ullrich engaged in blood doping (a prohibited method) and used several prohibited substances, including growth hormones, IGF-1, testosterone patches (PCH), EPO and a masking substance referred to as magic powder that is said to destroy EPO in urine samples," it said. IGF-1 is a hormone similar to insulin. The panel expressed "surprise" that Ullrich did not challenge the evidence at a hearing held last August. Instead, Ullrichs lawyers focused only on procedural issues, arguing that the case should be heard by an anti-doping tribunal in Switzerland where he held his riders licence. The CAS arbitrators also suggested Ullrichs doping started before May 2005, the date from which they annulled all his race results. "The evidence presented by the UCI shows that Ullrichs intensive involvement with Dr. Fuentes doping program goes back to at least 2004, and likely substantially earlier," CAS said. In 2003, Ullrich finished runner-up to seven-time Tour winner Armstrong for the third time in a four-year span. Thursdays verdict showed how the 2005 Tour, Armstrongs final victory, had been affected by the Puerto doping ring organized by Fuentes from Madrid. Second-place Ivan Basso of Italy later served a two-year ban based on Puerto links, and Ullrichs sanction will likely move another Puerto suspect, Spanish rider Francisco Mancebo, up to third place. Armstrong had stood on the podium on the Champs Elysees in Paris that day, flanked by Basso and Ullrich, and praised the integrity of cyclings greatest race. Aiming his words at "the cynics and the skeptics," Armstrong said he was "sorry you dont believe in miracles. You should believe in these athletes and you should believe in these people." Ullrich had travelled to Madrid to link up with Fuentess doping operations "on multiple occasions" and paid C80,000 (US$106,000) for his services, the CAS ruling said. The riders DNA was later matched by German authorities to blood bags seized in Spain. Tour de France organizer ASO declined comment to The Associated Press about having to reorder another race result for the history books. It is unclear if the CAS panel suspect Ullrich was blood doping when he won an Olympic gold medal in the road race at the 2000 Sydney Games. He also won silver in the time trial, knocking Armstrong into the bronze medal position. The International Olympic Committee said in a statement to The AP that it "would not be appropriate" to comment before studying the judgment. German Olympic leader Thomas Bach said he hoped the Ullrich and Contador verdicts would deter other athletes from doping. "It is regrettable that Jan Ullrich didnt take the chance sooner to create clarity himself," Bach, an IOC vice-president, said in a statement. Ullrichs sentence could have been heavier. CAS rejected the International Cycling Unions request to impose a life ban and disqualify all of Ullrichs results since May 2002. CAS said Ullrichs six-month ban for using amphetamines outside of competition in 2002 should not be classed as a doping offence. A second offence can trigger a life ban. The UCI wanted Ullrich prevented him from ever working again in professional cycling. It had appealed to CAS to challenge a decision by Switzerlands Olympic committee to decline responsibility for prosecuting the former Swiss-based rider. CAS took jurisdiction for the much-delayed case, and ultimately rendered a damning verdict on cyclings recent history. wholesale nfl jerseys . The New York Rangers brushed all that aside and played well enough to head into the Olympic break on a winning note. Brad Richards and Mats Zuccarello scored in a shootout, and the Rangers beat Pittsburgh 4-3 on Friday night to hand the Penguins a rare loss in the tiebreaker. "We deserved this win with the way that we played the whole game," said New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who stopped two of three shots he faced in the shootout. "I dont know if it was desperation, but we understood how important this game was. We have a long break here and you definitely want to end it the right way." Benoit Pouliot scored twice in regulation for the Rangers, who bounced back from a home loss to Edmonton the night before and won for the fifth time in six games. The Penguins had won all four of their previous shootouts this season and 14 of the past 15 overall. Their most recent loss was two years ago to the day against Montreal. "Its not something that happens very often with our group -- our shooters and (Marc-Andre Fleury) in net," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "But Henrik is almost as good, and was tonight." Zuccarello, the second New York shooter in the tiebreaker, tucked a backhand under the pads of Fleury -- who had not allowed a shootout goal all season. Evgeni Malkin beat Lundqvist to extend the game before Richards flipped a shot past Fleury to end it. Lundqvist made 26 saves, running his winning streak to five games. "We played a real solid game," Richards said. "We played hard. Theyre going to get goals sometimes, that stuff happens, but we gave ourselves a chance to win." James Neal tied it for Pittsburgh with 2:56 left in regulation. It was Neals 20th goal of the season and third in three games. Olli Maatta and Malkin also scored for the Penguins, who lead second-place New York by 16 points in the Metropolitan Division. The final game day before the Olympic break for both teams began on a somewhat sombre note when the Penguins announced that Kris Letang will be out at least six weeks because of a stroke. Letang, who has been put on blood thinners, also was found to have a small hole in his heart. "No one expects to hear something like that," said Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who like the rest of his teammates was informed Friday morning about Letangs condition. "Its not something you typically hear about a guy who takes as good care as he does of himself. It was a surprise, but from what we heard, hess well taken care of and has got it under control. nfl jerseys china. " Without their top defenceman for the fifth straight game, Pittsburgh allowed 41 shots on goal and had a rare weak penalty-killing effort. The Penguins lost for only the second time in their last 18 home games, ending a five-game home winning streak against the Rangers that dated to 2012. "Not a good game for us," Malkin said. "We need to play better; we were lucky to take one point. The last 10 minutes we played, I think, better than the Rangers. But we need to play 60 minutes, and for 60 minutes we werent that great." Pouliot gave New York a third-period lead when he capped his first multigoal game in almost a year with 10:38 left. Pouliot wristed a rebound of Dan Girardis shot up under the crossbar from close range past Fleury for the Rangers second power-play goal of the game -- the first two goals Pittsburghs NHL-best penalty kill allowed at home in a span of 10 games (30 chances). Girardi also scored on the power play, in the opening minute of the second period. It took the Rangers 64 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Zuccarello extended his point streak to six games when he earned an assist after Pouliot shoved a puck in that Fleury had pinned between his skate and the right post. Maatta answered 11 minutes later with the first of two goals on the night for Pittsburghs NHL-leading power play, slamming home a rebound of Crosbys shot into an open net for the rookies sixth of the season. Malkin added a power-play goal in the second period, a one-timed slap shot from outside the right circle off a feed from Neal. The goal, Malkins 18th of the season, extended his point streak to five games. That tied it 2-all at 8:29 of the second after Girardi had scored during the periods opening minute. "We definitely played better than we did (Thursday)," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "I thought we played with more energy and more focus and more purpose to our game. And we had to -- were playing against such a strong opponent that we had to bring our A game to the table. And I thought 5-on-5 we played a real solid game." The Rangers improved to 4-2 in shootouts this season. Pittsburgh had won 22 of 25 shootouts dating to Feb. 26, 2011. Fleury stopped Pouliot on the Rangers first attempt, extending the goalies streak to 12 unsuccessful shootout tries by opponents this season.
